Tooth decay is tooth disease also known as Dental Caries; it is caused by acids that stick to the enamel and braise out the enamel. In most cases, tooth decay causes a hole inside the teeth which needs to be filled regularly or in worst cases, the tooth will be removed by a dentist. Tooth decay is a process that is mainly caused by our day to day habits and can be prevented by forming new health habits.

Letís look at some of the major causes of tooth decay; knowledge of the causes will help you take proactive steps towards prevention of tooth decay.

1. Poor Oral Hygiene: this is the number cause of tooth decay; most people donít take out time to maintain oral hygiene habits such as brushing of teeth after each meal and flossing the teeth immediately after taking a snack. Why poor hygiene is the number one cause of tooth decay is that when you donít observe proper oral hygiene, food particles left inside the mouth will decay, cling to the teeth and erasing them with time.

2. High Sugary Diet: if your diet is made up of sugary food and drinks, then you run a higher risk of getting tooth decay. Why? sugary food and drinks contain acids that fasten the process of braising off the enamel with time; carbohydrates are also known to have that effect on the teeth. The effect of sugar on the teeth can be reduced by brushing or flossing the teeth immediately after meal.
