In Nigerian school system, there are two types of universities; the private universities and the public universities. The private universities are owned and managed by private individuals with little or no interference from the government, while the public universities are managed by the government. The public universities are of two types; the state universities which is managed by the state government, and the federal universities which is managed by the federal government. Each of the two types of universities has their own advantages and disadvantages, but I will like to loo into the benefits which public universities have over private universities.

- Cheaper Tuition fees: The one major benefit that a public university has over a private university is that the cost of attending a public university is very low when compared that of private universities. Some federal universities pay as low as N20, 000 per year as tuition fee, while some private universities pay as much as 1 million naira year as tuition fee, depending on the course you are studying.

- Popularity of Degree Certificates: Both within and outside the shores of the country, degree certificates from public universities especially federal universities are more easily accepted than those from a private university. This is because, most of the public universities have had much longer history and goodwill since they've been in existence for a long time and have had more graduates than private ones.

- Favourability In The Labour Market: it is assumed that students that graduated from public universities have better chances of getting employed immediately after graduation, than their counterparts from the private universities. This is because majority of the management in big companies and organizations are mostly made up of graduates of those public universities.

- Larger network: Students who attended a public university have access to a much larger network of friends and peers in their schools than those in private universities and this is because private universities are still growing and expensive and hence, don't admit students as much as public universities.
